Alfriston's Christmas Weekend of 'Comforts and Joys'


Friday 5th December

  • Start the weekend with a Christmas Fun Quiz hosted by The Tudor House Restaurant at War Memorial Hall. Doors open at 6:45. For bookings call Roger or Louise on 01323 870891 (funds raised will benefit ARC & Comforts & Joys 2009).

Saturday 6th December

  • Alfriston School Christmas Fair featuring Santa’s Grotto & lots of festive stalls – plus lunch on offer! (War Memorial Hall, Noon-4.00pm
  • Christmas Café at URC Hall (refreshments served 10.00am-1.00pm by St. Andrew’s Church, and from 2.00-5.00pm by the WI)
  • Give your Christmas Wishes to the Snow Queen to hang on the Alfriston Tree – you’ll find her near Alfriston’s Market Cross, adding her special magic to stars you can write on to help make your wishes come true! (Funds benefit Heartstart & Comforts & Joys 2009)
  • Guess the Weight of the Christmas Cake at Badgers Tea Room (all day)
  • Thank Your Lucky Stars (free draw all day at Alfriston Gallery – enter to win a new print by artist Paul Evans!)
  • Salvation Army concerts (1:15.pm on the Tye; 2:15pm at Wilson’s Yard; 3:15pm, courtyard opposite Badgers)
  • Model Train & Scalextric display at The Smugglers (all day)
  • Poetry readings at Stones of Alfriston (Noon, 3.00pm & 5.00pm)
  • Craft Day at the Clergy House along with Children’s Corner (11.00-4.00pm)
  • Did Churchill Stay Here? Display by Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Historical Society at Wingrove House (all day)
  • History walks for grown-ups, starting from Wingrove House (weather permitting; 11.00am & 2.00pm)
  • Heartstart Support Raffle (all day at Banana Tree)
  • Hog Roast & Mulled Wine at The Smugglers (Noon to 5.00pm)
  • Sparkle up Your Sparklers free at Pearls (all day)
  • Electric Corkscrew Demonstrations & Free Turkey Carving-Knife Sharpening (one per customer) at Steamer Trading Cookshop (11.00-4.00pm)
  • Roasted chestnuts and mulled wine – plus fortune-telling! – at Moonrakers (Noon-3.00pm)
  • Rumplestiltskin children’s entertainment at Deans Place Hotel (promptly at 4:15; for details and reservations, call 01323 870248)
  • Gingerbread treat tree for young customers at Chestnuts (all day)
  • Christmas Fantasy Table Settings at Diana Antiques (all day)
  • Magic Kisses under the Mistletoe at Bat’s Wing Apothecary (all day)
  • Victorian Flower Girl gifts, with voucher for In Fragrante  (all day)
  • Roaming Players reciting Christmas Poetry (many venues; throughout the day)
  • Spirit of the Andes ‘Happy Hour’ at The Apiary, including 10% discount (3:30-4:30)

  • Family Service at St. Andrews Church: ‘Follow the Star” (11.00am)
  • Pudding Paradise – decadent grown-up desserts made by Alfriston’s restaurants, tearooms, pubs and food purveyors, served at The Star Inn from 11.00am to 4.00pm (funds raised will support Comforts & Joys 2009)
  • Preschool Christmas tombola, & child-friendly fun at the URC Hall. Tea and more refreshments on offer, to raise funds for ARC (11.00-4.00pm)
  • Stories & songs for children at The Clergy House along with Children’s Corner (11.00-4.00pm)
  • Shire Horse Cart rides (leaving from The Smugglers (11.00-4.00pm)
  • Did Churchill Stay Here? Display by Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Historical Society at Wingrove House (all day)
  • History walks for grown-ups, starting from Wingrove House (weather permitting; 11am & 2pm)
